What is the Difference Between Medifast & Optifast Weight Loss Programs?

I’ve lost over 40 pounds on Medifast and I am often asked this question. I think because both diet plans have the word “fast” in the name, many people assume that they are similar.

However, in researching Medifast and in finding information for this article, I know that there are some people who chose to consume nothing but the Medifast liquids for a few weeks and then transition to the solids, hoping for quicker or more dramatic weight loss.

The main difference that I can see between the two diet plans is that Optifast requires doctor’s supervision at a special clinic. You must go in weekly for a weigh in and consultation. Medifast, although doctor supervised, researched and backed, (with studies from Studies conducted by researchers from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health), is widely available on the internet without doctor intervention. Of course, no one would argue that medical advice can’t hurt in any situation. Although my doctor is hugely impressed with my progress, he doesn’t monitor my choices.

Medifast does offer a bit more variety. Optifast offers three flavors of shakes and some soups. Medifast offers shakes as well (with a bit more choices) but also has lattes, cappuccinos, teas, fruit drinks, and a wider variety of soup choices. I can vouch that all of these items are pretty decent tasting, especially if you use sugar free syrups in the shakes and drinks for variety. (Adding shaved ice to the fruit drinks makes a pretty mean snow cone.)

Medifast is also cheaper as far as I can tell. The pricing I found for Optifast indicated a cost of $110 per week. My cost for Medifast is about $8-$10 per day, which is at least $100 per month cheaper.

I should disclose that although I am currently on Medifast, I am not on a liquid only diet. I do currently include the solids on the five plus one plan (oatmeals, chili, eggs, puddings, bars, etc.) I find that these extremely low calorie, high protein options work very effectively for me. I’m down to a size eight and have gained 2 inches in height.

I have had a huge amount of success on the five plus one plan and can recommend it to anyone, but I hope this article has helped show some of the differences between Optifast and Medifast.

Which one will help you to lose weight and keep it off? Many people make the mistake of thinking a low calorie diet means skipping meals. Meal replacement diets make weight loss easy; their ready-made meals have the right amount of calories and nutrients.

In 1980, a physician created Medifast as a dietary supplement. Today Medifast has grown into a complete diet program complete with a line of weight-loss products and a support network. Both dieters and doctors alike give Medifast a thumbs-up. In fact, over 20,000 doctors have recommended Medifast since 1980.

Medifast puts the focus is on a healthy weight loss diet. Through eating low-caloric, well-balanced, meals, the Medifast diet can help you lose up to five pounds in the first week. The program also offers maintenance support to help dieters sustain their weight loss.

Herbal supplements can ultimately be dangerous; because of this, Medifast doesn’t include them in their diet program. Several clinical studies conducted by researchers from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have verified that Medifast is a healthy, effective weight loss plan.

The Medifast diet plan is perfect for people from all walks of life: New mothers can shed the “baby weight” they’ve recently gained; teens can lose the pounds they put on during growth spurts; menopausal women, diabetics, seniors, and vegetarians can all benefit from the Medifast diet!

They were also much likely to stick to their diets! Medifast is affordable and accessible. It will only cost about $80 per week, and will allow you to cut out all the unhealthy snacks (and their expenses) that you’d normally eat.

Study results have shown that type 2 diabetics, those with hypertension and others with obesity related diseases do see positive weight loss results. Studies conducted by researchers from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

In fact, there are over 20,000 doctors who have recommended Medifast since 1980 to their patients. How does Medifast work? Each day you’ll consume five Medifast meals, which include the aforementioned low-calorie, portion-controlled soft foods like shakes, puddings and bars. Then, once a day you’ll consume what they call a Lean and Green Meal. This meal is made of fresh foods that you purchase from the grocer, and will include lean proteins like turkey, fish, chicken or beef, a small portion of your choice of condiment or sauce, and three servings of your choice of raw vegetables, cooked vegetables or green salad.

To both deter hunger and consume these six daily meals, Medifast advises that you eat every three hours and consume at least 64 oz. of water throughout the day. While food is the primary focus of the Medifast plan, they do acknowledge the important role exercise will play in your weight loss. They do not provide customers with a detailed fitness plan, but they do provide guidelines that they think customers should follow.

Medifast encourages making time for daily fitness, and it can be the activity of your choice. In fact, they recommend finding something you love, whether that’s a treadmill, dancing or swimming, and do that for a minimum of ten minutes daily. If a proven approach to weight loss that offers convenience and balanced nutrition is what you’re looking for, then consider Medifast to help you with your diet and weight loss goals.

Medifast Momentum Review

Medifast is a complete comprehensive weight loss program that encompasses,  men, women and those with diabetes’s. Medifast has thought of everything for those who are trying to lose weight. These programs have been designed to get those who have been trying to lose weight, success. While most people may succeed initially, it is not uncommon to find that you get to a point in your weight loss where you begin a decline of weight loss, and eventually just stop. Medifast has thought of this too.  Introduced the “Momentum Line” to do just that, keep your momentum.

The “Momentum Line” foods don’t taste much different than the regular items offered in the 5 in 1 Meals. Of course you are paying a bit more for these specialty items, but if you are committed to your weight loss program taking all the steps necessary to ensure you reach your goal is important. Most have found with using the Momentum Line to get through a “plateau” they lose a little bit more weight on a little less exercise.  Many don’t feel any adverse effects of changing their routine in meal plans. Most individuals experience isn’t much different than being on the 5 plus 1 except for a bit more weight loss.

Wanting to try this if you have a very short amount of time to lose the weight or you’ve hit a  plateau is a good alternative to quitting the program, or taking drastic measures trying to push through your weight stand still.  But often plateaus are very short lived on this diet, even with the 5 plus 1. Is it worth the extra money?  It can be beneficial if you’re in a huge hurry or if you absolutely refuse to exercise.  This is definitely going to be a personal choice as to what fits your lifestyle. The regular women’s package does the job well and suits most individuals.

Medifast is a portion-controlled, nutritionally balanced, low fat weight loss program that helps people lose weight faster and more effectively than traditional diet plans. This highly effective weight loss program uses a combination of meal replacements and real food, making it more sustainable for people to go through the diet.

The premise of the Medifast diet program is that starving is not the answer to losing weight. Instead, what gets your metabolism going to lose weight is by following a routine of eating nutritionally balanced and portioned meals every two to three hours instead of the usual breakfast, lunch and dinner routine. Momentum products, when added to your meal plan either during the weight loss or maintenance phase of your diet plan, are a perfect way to boost your own personal efforts and maximize your weight loss potential. If your looking for success this is the best way to achieve your weight loss goal, while adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Medifast Lean and Green Meal Ideas

In just 3 minutes this article will tell you everything you need to know about Medifast’s Lean and Green Meals to help you be healthy, fit and feeling your best faster than you ever thought possible.

With obesity on the rise and being described as an epidemic across the country, eating right has never been more important. The Medifast Meal Plan has virtually taken the country by storm.  Medifast has designed meals that allow specifically formulated meals to be mixed with lean and green meals ideas. Medifast offers meal plans for men, women and people who have been diagnosed as diabetics.

Believe it or not, menu ideas for the Medifast lean & Green meals whenever you are eating out are quite simple to come up with. Most restaurants have a healthy portion to their menu and will allow you to mix and match some lean meat with some vegetables. As long as you choose wisely whenever you are eating out, you will not have a difficult time putting together a meal that fits right in with the diet plan. Not only that, it will help to keep you sane so that you can continue on with the entire weight loss program.

Because each of the lean & Green meals consist of a lean protein and a vegetable, you really have a wide variety of choices and you don’t need to restrict your Lean & Green meal to dinner every day. Feel free to have it for breakfast one day and lunch on another.

You can do such things as omelette’s in the morning that are made with one whole egg and five egg whites, a little bit of cheese and the required vegetable. For lunch on the go, you can try a tuna salad that is made from 6 ounces tuna, to hard-boiled egg whites and some diced vegetables along with low-fat mayonnaise. If you want some breaded chicken, you can try making a breading from the Medifast crackers and using it just like you would shake and bake.

Not a big fan of cooking? You might wonder if you can use frozen dinners for your Medifast lean & green meal? The main reason that frozen dinners aren’t really appropriate for use as a lean and green mealis because of the way most frozen dinners are processed, they have too much sodium. Remember, your lean and green meal is pretty simple. It’s 5 to 7 ounces of lean protein, two cups of salad and 1/2 cup to 1 1/2 cups of raw or cooked vegetables. Opting out for frozen food alternatives won’t get the nutrition value you are looking for following the Medifast meal plan.

It is exciting to design your own meal for a diet plan as it requires much creativity. In like manner, Medifast dieters need to come up with their own menu ideas for the Lean and Green meal. They have to use this meal properly. It can help to keep dieters concentrated on the meal plan. The Lean and Green meal can be taken in a dinner out. For example, a busy businessman can have it for lunch with a client. This means that the changes in one’s schedule do not have to cause the dieter to deviate from the diet. This is a great addition to the Medifast diet plan. It offers a complete and comprehensive package .

The Medifast Plan – How Safe is the Medifast Diet?

Many people lose weight very quickly on Medifast, which has led to many asking one question quite a bit…

How safe is Medifast?

Let me just say upfront that Medifast is quite safe, as long as you are following the rules and don’t have any health issues that would be contraindicated for Medifast use. If you are generally in good health and not pregnant, then dieting with Medifast should be just fine. Medifast has been around since 1980 and it is designed by doctors and nutritionists. It’s also been a part of a number of clinical studies, particularly at John Hopkins. Studies referenced here were conducted by researchers from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In fact, for years, the only place you could actually get Medifast was at your doctor’s office. Now you can order it yourself, but it is always a good idea to discuss any diet plans with your doctor before you proceed.

Don’t Skip Meals

Medifast is carefully designed to be followed as outlined in their planning material. This calls for five Medifast meals each day and 1 Lean & green meal, which is a meal that you put together yourself from fresh vegetables and a good protein source such as poultry, fish or beef. There are meatless options to choose from as well. Since Medifast is very low calorie (about 1,000 per day), it is important that you do not skip any meals. It’s quite okay to combine two Medifast meals together if you had to skip a meal, but you want to make sure you get all of those meals eaten so that you get enough calories and the right quantities of nutrients.

It is also important to eat your lean & green meal, as that’s the one meal per day in which you are getting fresh food, and lots of fiber to keep you regular. The protein at that meal is very important too. When dieting, it is always important to consume enough protein, otherwise your body may resort to using muscle tissue rather than fat for its energy source. So don’t skip meals!

When not to Use Medifast

Now for the bad news. If you have Type 1 diabetes or are currently pregnant, you should not use the Medifast plan. There are also some contraindications for some other health issues as well — such as liver or kidney disease; clotting disorders; a recent stroke or heart attack; cancer; steroid use; and, lithium use. If you have any issues like these, you should definitely talk to your doctor before embarking on any weight loss plan. And if you were thinking about Medifast in particular, it’s important for your doctor to get to know the program so he or she can decide whether it is appropriate for you.

Other than some serious health conditions though, most dieters do quite well on Medifast and have a lot of weight loss success pretty quickly, while also avoiding being hungry all the time. And if you have any health concerns, Medifast has tons of information available to help both you and your doctor figure things out. They even have lists of common allergens that show which of their foods contain them, so if there’s a problem food that you need to watch out for, Medifast can help you avoid taking any chances.
