I just got engaged two days ago and now it’s time to start planning!I would love tips and hints about everything. Please help me out. How much should I expect to spend? We want to have a standard Catholic wedding, nothing too fancy though. A semi-large reception with an open bar. We plan to have family help with food so catering won’t be needed. What are some ways to cut costs because lets face it, weddings are very expensive. Thanks!!

1. In a blender, puree 1 cup chopped cucumbers, dry mustard, 1 tsp sour cream and salt and pepper to taste.2. Transfer to a bowl and chill overnight (or at least 6 hours).3. Stir in finely diced cucumber and chopped mint.4. Garnish soup with 1 tsp sour cream (optional) and mint sprigs or additional chopped mint leaves.
To create a deeper shade of green for the gazpacho, replace ¼ cup of peeled, seeded cucumber (¼” diced) with ¼ cup of diced green bell pepper.
Zesty Chicken Soup
6 oz. cooked chicken breast (grill, bake, poach or saute),cut into ½ inch pieces. Toss into saucepan with a can of chicken broth and a can of Ro-Tel (or just stewed/diced tomatoes if you don’t want spicy); Add garlic & basil to taste and heat. Serve hot, topped with ¼ cup shredded, low-fat cheese (such as parmesan), 1 teaspoon diced green onion and cilantro to taste.
Quick Chicken Caesar Salad
Pre-washed bags of romaine lettuce Dole Light Caesar Salad Kits. You can cook your own chicken breast and dice it up, or buy packaged grilled chicken strips (Costco has some very tasty options). For variety, add sun-dried tomato and occasionally raw or sautéed mushrooms. Just remember to leave off the croutons!
Tuna salad
6oz water packed canned tuna, drained … hard boiled 2 eggs … remove the yolks, dice the whites … mix together with diced dill pickles, celery, bell peppers, onion (1/2 cup of whatever low-carb veggies you like) and 2T “Carb-friendly,” low-fat Miracle Whip. Serve over 2 cups of a combo salad greens & sprouts.
Quick Taco Salad
Brown 1 pound ground beef and then add your favorite fresh salsa (I add the entire small container of ROJO’s salsa). When making it for 4, use 2 lbs. ground beef and a large container of salsa (about 2 -21/2 cups). Continue to cook until the liquid in the salsa is cooked out and the meat/salsa mixture is quite thick. Serve over shredded lettuce. Top with 2T. grated parmesan or other low fat cheese and sliced olives (up tot 6 olives).
Lettuce Wraps
Brown 6 oz of lean ground turkey, add pepper and minced garlic to taste. Set aside and drain. Saute chopped onion, a few slices of diced mushroom, 3 slices of red pepper and 3 of green pepper, all diced, in 1 T. of extra virgin olive oil. (for a total of about 1 1/2 c of veggies.) Add 1 T lite soy sauce. Add the turkey mixture and cook a while longer. Carefully wash and dry 3 large lettuce leaves. Fill leaves with turkey/vegetable mixture and wrap ‘em up. OPTION: Use Steel’s Sesame Ginger sauce on your wraps.
“Cheesy” Asparagus or Broccoli
Add 4 oz water and 2 oz. lowfat cheese to a packet of Medifast Cream of Broccoli Soup mix. Use it as a “sauce” to pour over broccoli or asparagus … very filling…. You can then have your lean meat as a different “meal.”
Stir Fry
You can enjoy a variety of stir fry dishes for your Lean & Green meal. You can easily swap out the type of protein you use and the various types of vegetables. For oil, you can use a small amount of olive oil or try some sesame oil. If you use a non-stick pan, a little oil goes a long way. Good veggies are broccoli, green beans and some pepper and onion strips. Mushrooms always go into the mix. Don’t forget the garlic! Once you heat the oil add the vegetables and stir them constantly. They are done when the colors turn bright. Add either diced and cooked chicken or shrimp and stir fry for another minute or two. Serve over a bed of lettuce.
Shrimp Stir Fry
Cook green pepper strips and onion strips in Pam and a tiny bit of olive oil in a skillet until still a bit crunchy; add fresh garlic and cherry tomatoes, cook a bit longer. Add cooked shrimp just long enough to heat. Serve over bed of greens (baby spinach is excellent). Optional: drizzle with 1T sesame salad dressing.
Chicken & Broccoli Sesame Ginger Stir-Fry
Steam 11/2 cups broccoli crowns in the microwave,
Saute chicken breast strips in PAM,
Add 4-5 onion chunks and the steamed broccoli
Top with 2 T. Steel’s Sesame Ginger Sauce.
Serve over 2 cup mixture of chopped/shredded romaine lettuce or mixed greens with steamed bean sprouts
NOTE: If you’re also cooking dinner for folks not on program, simply serve their portions over steamed rice.
Crispy Chicken Bake
1. Pulse one packet of crackers in the food processor until fine (or a rolling pin over the packet works, too). 2. Toast cracker crumbs lightly in 350 degree oven. 3. Take crumbs out of oven and season to taste (garlic powder, salt, pepper) 4. Dip 6 oz.chicken tenders or breasts VERY lightly into fat free dressing of your choice (or spritz with fat free dressing), 5. Press chicken into bread crumb mixture. Bake or broil as usual.
Stuffed Chicken Breast
6 oz. grilled chicken breast, split and stuffed with ½ cup chopped spinach and diced bell peppers (the veggies can either be fresh and seasoned with salt, pepper, lemon pepper, or lemon juice or sauted lightly in Pam). Top with 1T shredded parmesan cheese.Serve with salad:1-11/2 cups Romaine lettuce½ cup mixed cucumbers and tomatoes2 tablespoons Newman’s Own Balsamic Vinaigrette
Greek Omelet
Whip 2 whole eggs plus 4 egg whites with 1T. water; set aside.
Lightly saute 1 cup diced, multi-colored bell pepper in 1T. olive oil;
Add egg mixture to pan of sautéed peppers and cook on low heat until egg is no longer runny (covering helps the egg cook more evenly)
Add ½ cup choppedspinach and 6 black or green olives, sliced) on top of cooked egg; fold egg in half
Top with 1-2 t. shredded parmesan cheese
Salmon
5 oz. salmon (smoked, baked, poached, broiled, grilled in Pam. Costco also carries some very tasty salmon burger patties that can be heated in a small frying pan sprayed with a little Pam), served over 1-½ cups julienne vegetable strips (use one or several of the following: cucumbers, zucchini, green/red/yellow peppers, tomatoes). May be served with 2 T. Martha’s Tasty Tartar Sauce (see recipe below) or your favorite salad dressing (a dill dressing is especially good).
Lobster
7 oz. steamed Maine lobster served with1 cup sautéed zucchini (with a touch of basil)½ cup marinated tomato salad
Broiled Seafood Fillet
(makes 1 serving)
1 Tablespoon lemon juice1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil7 oz. flounder or cod or sole1 small tomato, seeded and diced1 Tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill or 1/2 teaspon dillweed1 teaspoon bottled capers (optional)1/2 C. fresh mushrooms, sauteed in 1 teaspoon olive oil (optional)Arrange fillet on nonstick baking sheet. Combine lemon juice and oil and brush filet with 1/4 the lemon-oil mixture. Broil 2 minutes on one side.Combine tomato and dill with the remaining lemon-oil mixture; turn over fillet, and top with the tomato mixture. Broil 3-4 minutes, until fish flakes ealily with fork. Top with capers and sauteed mushrooms. Season with salt and pepper to taste.Serve over 11/2 cup mixed salad greens of your choice. Drizzle with 1 Tablespoon buttermilk dressing (or your favorite dressing…you can use more dressing if it is very low-carb and fat free).
Fish is great to have as part of your “lean & green” meal—two to three times a week is ideal. This tartar sauce is a family favorite, and a great way to add some zest and variety.
Martha’s Tasty Tartar Sauce
Use 1 Tablespoon as a condiment…and it is not even cheating! In small bowl stir together with fork:1 C Kraft Free Mayo (or other nonfat/low carb mayonnaise)2 T. parsley flakes1 to 2 T. minced dill pickle1 to 2 T. minced onion1 T. bottled capers (lightly chopped)Mix well and refrigerate for several hours before serving so flavors can blend10 calories per tablespoon (0 from fat).
Grilled Steak and Roasted Asparagus
Steak and asparagus are great together.
Marinated steak:
Many marinades sold at the supermarket contain a lot of sugar and are high in carbs. Select a marinade with 2 grams of carbs or less and 0 fat.
Or, you can make your own beer marinade: combine 1 can (or bottle) of beer, 1 teaspoon crushed garlic, 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper and 1 T. olive oil. (The alcohol burns itself off during cooking, so you don’t need to worry about the alcohol and it adds only negligible calories. Just don’t sample the beer before it cooks out…way too many calories)
Marinate meat at least 20 minutes (1-2 hours is best). Grill in pan or on barbecue.
Roasted Asparagus
Spread out asparagus in a baking dish and drizzle with either one tablespoon olive oil or non-fat dressing (either Italian or Caesar). Toss the asparagus until evenly covered and spread out flat again. Grind some black pepper over asparagus. Roast in 350 degree oven for 10-15 minutes, depending on how crispy you like your asparagus. NOTE: you can roast a variety of the lower carbohydrate vegetables this way and serve together with the meat/fish of your choice.
What are some dating tips for new guys?
You are on the first date with a girl you have a crush on. Your palms are sweating, you are trying damn hard to come up with something funny to say, only to have long silences in your conversation. She gets up after an hour and says: “Sorry but it’s getting late. I have to go home to feed my dog.” Before you could say something, she has left already.
I’m sure the above situation has come up in your worst nightmares. The most crucial part of your interactions and the key to success with women is the first date. If you do it well, it will be easy to get down and dirty quickly.
Most guys do something boring on the first date. Going to the movies together, sitting at a cafe, having an expensive dinner at a restaurant – the list is endless. It’s easy to use this to your advantage: by putting in a little bit of fantasy, you will be way ahead of the crowd.
Here is how:
When I go out with a woman, I take her on an “adventure date”. This word has multiple meanings as you will see. We do something exciting and romantic in the same time. Something that brings you as close as it’s possible on a first date.
Let’s see an example:
A friend of mine takes his girls on an exciting outing. They visit one of the local sightseeing locations and end up at an abandoned ruin of a castle. By then it’s usually getting dark – don’t worry though, my friend is there to hug and provide safety for our just-a-little-bit frightened girl
Another example:
We have a hill in my city with a castle and some monuments on the top. There is a tunnel crossing the hill. A tunnel, which ends in a bridge. The bridge is illuminated at night giving a wonderful sight.
Usually, I take my date on a short walk among the monuments. As it is getting dark, we go on a tiny little road down the hill. A road, which leads us to a place that only a few people know: the top of the tunnel. And below us it’s the entire city giving a wonderful and romantic sight. This is the point where I go in for the first kiss with the girl.
Don’t think that you need special places or monuments to go on adventure dates. You can even do them indoors:
When the weather doesn’t allow going outside, I bring my girls to the local shopping center. We sit to a cafe and talk a bit. Then I stand up and invite them for a walk around. We visit a few shops while shopping some clothes for me. Then we play bowling or go to the local bookstore. It’s funny to laugh at the various love and sex advice books together with the girl.
The above are just examples, it’s easy to come up with your own ideas. All you need is a little bit of fantasy and to know your city a little. Check out a local city guide paper for some examples or ask a friend who knows.
The key of adventure dates is not in the adventure itself, but in sharing activities with the girl. If you sit to a cafe and stay there for 4 hours, it will be nothing more than a conventional date. But if you sit to a cafe, then visit other places as well while being together, she will lose her sense of time and feel like you’ve known each other for a while. In that state, it’s much easier to go in for the first kiss and get further.
What are some practical, reasonable, and good dating tips for young adults?
High school days are those times when you go gallivanting to different worlds, trying out different things and testing your boundaries. This happens in all aspects of your life, be it in your education, your family life and your love life.
And because this is the trial period of dating so to speak, things can be pretty awkward and confusing the first few tries. And even when you get the hang of it, there will be times when you would like to just pull your hair in utter frustration.
High school dating tip #1
Desperation is uncool
A lot of teenagers think that just because nobody has asked them out or that they don’t have a steady yet, it is the end of the world as they see it. Society, being the culprit, has encouraged the perception that single people have something unsavory about them. Remember that you are just starting out. High school dating is a time of taking it slow. There really is no hurry. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it especially in engaging in sexual relationships, then don’t. It is wiser and better to wait and have your first time with someone that you really feel a deep connection with. And for sure, you will meet lots of guys in high school, in college and after.
High school dating tip #2
Be the gentleman/gentlewoman
Whether in high school, college or even after school, respect and courtesy is important. One of the primary high school dating rule is to accord respect to others as you would want others to give you. This includes respecting their decisions and not enforcing your will onto them. Know your limits whether in cracking a dirty joke or touching a person. Some people are very sensitive. Be careful lest you invade another person’s personal space.
High school dating tip #3
Don’t make it your world
Remember that you are in high school to study and to learn about life. High school dating is just one part of that world that you are starting to discover. Set your priorities straight. There are things that you should be placing more importance on.
High school dating tip #4
Get involved
One way to meet people and high school dating “mates” is to join organizations and be actively involved in school activities and events. This will not only allow you to get to know a lot of people but will also showcase and at the same time develop your talents and enhance your confidence, something that you need to be successful in high school dating.
High school dating tip #5
Be safe.
Believing that you are not safe may be a negative thought but from the hundreds of cases of teenage violence and teenage pregnancy, it is perhaps better to err in the side of caution. Being safe does not mean that you will forgo with the whole high school dating thing. You can be safe while still having the time of your life dating people you like in high school. One dating tip is to be on the look out for suspicious actions and suspicious people. If you are meeting someone for the first time, make sure that you are meeting in a public place where you can be safe in the company of a lot of people. Also, never accept food or drinks from people that you do know. The food may be laced with drugs that can make you fall asleep.
Can someone give me some dating tips?
Do you know, as a single guy I have been asked many times recently by girls if I can explain basic male behavior in terms that we can all understand. Laborious chats over much wine have led to my lady friends confessing that all is not well in the world of reading what men are thinking. So the Singles Files decided to take a look. It appears that even in our advanced culture, the sexes still present the simplest misunderstandings. Men constantly appear to be a mystery when dating, and even as a man, I agree that we can be as frustrating and perplexing to the uninitiated. So it’s back to basics for us today.
Millions of years of evolution haven’t clouded human nature and even the most skillful women dater will have encountered male antics that defy belief. ‘He acts like a Neanderthal’ she may say. And do you, know, she isn’t far wrong. Why? Simple, man is a hunter; that is what he was designed to do: Hunt. Which essentially means that in the world of dating the man wants to hunt you, even if you are the easiest catch on earth. Women forget this fact and ignore it at their peril. To get the man you want, you have to make them chase you and feel like they have achieved something when they eventually get to put their arm round your waist and give you a perfect kiss. If that sense of achievement is missing, your hunter will go on searching.
Okay so let’s move on to the Savannah plain to explain further. How do we know what men want and like. Well all hunters want to catch the lioness, she with the thick mane and feline grace, queen of the jungle. Men will convince themselves that they could catch the lioness if they so wanted because they all like to think they are king of the jungle. But today they are too tired to do anything about it. That is exactly what happens when your hunters gather in bars together. They discuss the ones that got away and their prowess out in the field. However, you know and I know that the hunters out there are fooling themselves. They know deep down that they don’t have the ability to catch the queen of the jungle, but they like to think that they might, maybe.
No, instead our intrepid hunters will seek out the slightly (but not necessarily) easier target, the more satisfying and certainly beautiful prey, the Gazelle. The gazelle you see can be found in packs out any weekend night with their Gazelle friends. Gazelles live next door, or across the street. They are beautiful creatures and fairly obtainable: But not without a fight. So the chase is on. Which of our hunters will success in capturing his gazelle this weekend? The more they hunt and chase; and the longer they are made to chase, the more rewarded they will feel when they finally succeed. And inevitably our hunter will settle down and give up hunting. But only if his Gazelle makes him feel like he has succeeded and is a true catch. Now our hunter believes he caught his Gazelle all by himself, but maybe just maybe, the Gazelle let herself be caught. Eventually.
On the down side of our make believe Savannah is the antelope. Now our hunter wants the lioness and he tries to convince himself he could capture her if he really wanted but it is too much like hard work. He really knows that he will capture his Gazelle in all reality, but when Gazelles are scarce and hard to come by, he will go for the easy target, the antelope. Down in the bar on a Friday evening there are few Gazelles about but the antelope is grazing nearby so he pounces and achieves a result straight away. There is no chase, no thrill and hardly any sense of achievement, but it staves off his hunger for now. Tomorrow the hunt will begin again.
The antelope doesn’t fair too well out of this scenario but she was never going to put up too much of a chase and he was never going to be satisfied with the outcome. So at the next opportunity your hunter will be off seeking the gazelles once again, with a sly look in the direction of the lioness in a wishful thinking kind of way. And what if the hunter does finally get his gazelle, will he be satisfied? Invariably yes. The lioness is out of reach and far too scarce. The lioness may represent perfection in our hunters’ Savannah plain and he may even think about what if every now and again. However if he did catch the lioness, she would probably eat him alive! But the man as hunter will be extremely happy with his sense of achievement. The antelope will always lose out because she cannot provide our hunters with what they need and desire most – chase, thrill and an implicit satisfaction with the end result.
Where it all goes badly wrong is when the lioness, gazelle and even antelope go hunting the hunter. The hunter doesn’t know what to do and is not designed to cope in such situations. The hunter will be frightened and run away. So the important point to make is that allow the hunter to feel he is doing the chasing, even if secretly, he isn’t. The hunter will still feel like he deserves the feeling of success and achievement even if you led him to you.
Our urban jungles are full all such creatures. Hunters are everywhere. The unbelievably attractive and desirable lioness with her Manolo Blahnicks? Our hunter lusts after her but will rarely obtain. The beautiful Gazelle next door who puts up an excellent enough chase that the hunter will eventually settle with. The dowdy antelope is simply too obtainable to present a challenge. Now do not feel demeaned by this because of course your hunter is still the Neanderthal but if you think of our world on this level it becomes easier to get inside a man’s head. Men do love to chase girls and they will always fall for the one who makes them chase the longest and hardest. It’s nature in full throw. They do hanker after the catwalk beauties in our society but men are not so stupid, in reality most know they have little chances of success. Only the most confident men will even bother to chase at all.
So if you want to bring your hunter into the fold, keep him chasing you girls, long after he thinks he has caught you, still keep him chasing. You maybe the lioness or the Gazelle but he will thank you for it. After all, maybe just maybe, men are the simplest of creatures to please. Whatever you do in our dating jungle, never allow yourself to be the antelope.
Watch your step girls; it certainly is still a jungle out there.
Want diet-friendly meals shipped to your door? Here’s how some programs compare
The price of losing weight for 22-year-old Thomas Ferraro is about $300 a month.
That’s how much he pays for Nutrisystem to ship low-cal meals to his doorstep. The food is shelf stable, meaning it doesn’t go bad for months even without refrigeration.
“When I first looked at the packaging, I started laughing. It was weird to have everything fit on one plate. It was an adjustment at first,” said Ferraro, a recent college graduate who lives with his parents in New York City and is looking to start his own business.
At 5 feet, 9 inches, his goal is to shed 40 of his 230 pounds by summer. It’s the first meal delivery program he’s tried, but there are many others on the market.
You’ve likely seen the ads in recent weeks, as companies look to capitalize on weight loss resolutions for 2010. Many are running promotions too, or offer ongoing discounts for larger purchases. That’s how Ferraro is paying about $70 less than the advertised price for his monthly shipments.
Below are snapshots of a few major programs, including pricing and what you get in return. The company Web sites provide a good sense of the food quality to expect. Most programs suggest you fill out the meals with your own fruits, vegetables and drinks too.
In addition to the national distributors listed below, there may be smaller operations that cater to your area.
