Ah yes, the ancient “slippery slope” argument: if we allow to consenting adults of the same gender to get married, it will somehow lead to the acceptance of people getting married to their pets, their cars, their favorite sandwiches, and so on. The fact is, there is still a very clear line between two human adults who can express a desire to be married to one another and anyone or anything who is unable to make this choice in an informed and rational way. Children have ALWAYS been considered as part of the family and yet they are generally not allowed to marry until they reach legal adulthood. I don’t see why animals, who additionally cannot speak or make their wishes known for the most part, would be granted that right. Sorry, but this argument doesn’t hold even a drop of water. The fact that many people consider their pets part of their families – in both healthy and unhealthy ways – does not automatically lead to the conclusion that pets will soon be getting the right to marry or consent to sex.
