Questions about wedding dresses! Help please?

I јυѕt gοt engaged οn Thanksgiving аnd wе аrе рlοttіng tο gеt married іn thе summer οf 2010 (nο date chosen уеt). I don’t really know anything аbουt wedding stuff, рlοttіng, etc ѕο hopefully ѕοmе οf уου саn give mе ѕοmе ехсеllеnt advice.

I know іt varies a lot, bυt whаt whаt price range dο wedding dresses rυn? Alѕο, I’ve heard іt’s cheaper tο gο tο David’s Bridal thаn a local bridal salon; іѕ thіѕ rіght? If ѕο, hаνе аnу οf уου shopped аt David’s аnd іf ѕο hοw wаѕ уουr experience?

Aѕ far аѕ price range, I want еіthеr аn a-line οr more preferably a ball gown. I’m nοt looking fοr аnу οthеr styles. Anу thουght whаt I mіght expect tο pay? Mу parents аrе οnlу paying fοr ѕοmе οf thе wedding аnd I’m οn mу οwn tο bυу thе dress ѕο I need tο know whаt I сουld budget fοr.

Alѕο, I’ve heard once уου bυу уουr dress іt саn take forever fοr іt tο come іn, аnd even longer tο gеt alterations done. Thаt being ѕаіd, whеn ѕhουld I gеt mу dress?

Thanks іn advance fοr уουr hеlр! :)

I bought my dress at David’s Bridal and took it home the same day. It was $350 i reckon. My alterations were done by a local lady, which made them MUCH cheaper.

First I would definatly support your local bridal shop before trying David’s. David’s dresses are a dime a dozen and that is why they are so cheap.
Bridal shops…as long as they are not the crazy upscale shops…have dresses in all price ranges. Usually $200 and up. Unless it is a huge city shop or a very wealthy area, the shop dresses will usually top out at around $2000. (In most areas). I would suggest going online and looking for dresses first and then finding out locally were the dresses you like are. Just google Bridal and your city name and see what comes up. You can go to the bridal shop web sites and see what they have and if you like them. I would start shopping about 9-12 months prior to the wedding. Dresses can take up to 4 months to come in and then alerations have to be done.

I would go to Maggiesottero.com and look at her dresses. I like her a lines and ball gowns. They run $600-1500 usually and a small more for silk.
Others. Alfredangelo.com Marysbridal.com davincibridals.com those are some that have affordable but still very pretty dresses. Go online and find out what you like, print pics and take them to the shop. ALSO, at David’s you will have to pay for your dress 100% up front but at a local shop you can place a deposit down and slowly pay it off. It just has to be paid off by pick up. That helps with a lot of brides who want the nicer dresses but do not have the money all at once. Excellent luck.

I’m worried I can’t help with most of your questions– but a lot of people have problems with David’s Bridal. Stains on dresses, useless customer service….

    Congrats!

You reminded me of me when I first got engaged! I was lost and didn’t know where to start.

Any who, hopefully some of this may help you out. Wedding dress can run anywheres from $99 David’s Bridal have to thousand and thousands. It probably is cheaper to go to David’s Bridal but I would suggest with all the experiences I have had with them in the past not to. I find there dress are reasonable price but I would rather pay a small more to have a better quality and better help that I received there. I did not buy my dress there but got the bridesmaids dresses there and it was a very huge hassle. I did make an appointment and everything just didn’t get the help I expected. In fact, my flower girl dress was picked out w/a sash the lady fitted her and everything knowing my color. Then when her mother went to check out they told her that particular dress didn’t come w/my color sash. As well dresses must be paid in full before ordering. If you order dyed shoes you must order them and pay. Then once they come in resend them off through them to get them dyed. Just want I experienced there. I did buy my dresses from a local bridal salon and was overwhelmed with the help I received. I even received a hand written letter the day after in the mail just thank me for going shopping there.

I have seen ballgown or a-line at a local place from 300-1200. The local salon I went through uses Essence of Australia, Casablanca, and many more if you want to see just a few different kinds in that price range.

My dress is suppose to take about 4-6 months due to custom length (since I’m small) ordered that with the company so less I have to do when it comes in. The dress will be redone to the length I need it for all the details to be brought to smaller scale. I would recommened at least 6 months before just incase.

Hope some of that helps. Congrats and best of luck!

The knot.com is a really excellent place to look at dresses to get an thought of the dresses out there. You can sort by style.

    Hey, congrats!
Your wedding is still a small while away, but this is a excellent time to start scouting sites. Most places want a deposit several months to a year in advance. If you start looking now, you’ll be able to lock in the date of your choice. Choosing the venue is also a excellent jumping off point for finding caterers, florists, bakers, photographers, and other local services. The people who work at the venue are going to know who’s who locally and can give recommendations (some come as package deals too).

As far as the dress, I would really advise you to stay away from David’s Bridal. I’ve just heard too many horror tales, the moral of all those tales being that you get what you pay for. At the very least have a look at your local boutiques so you can compare quality and price. If you go into David’s and you see something you really like, I won’t say don’t go for it. Just know what you’re getting for what you’re paying.

The dress can be the largest headache. Personally (and I recognize that this may be a small irrational since it’s two years out) but I would get the dress now (if you find one you like) in the size that fits you best off the rack. It can hang out in your closet until you get closer to the date, effectively alleviating some of the stress. Make sure you call tailors and find out what the lead time is for them to alter a wedding dress, and mark the date on your calendar.
Finally remember, it’s simple to take a dress in, hard to impossible to let it back out.
