Two of my husband’s cousins (siblings) are getting married next year (in June and September). I’m trying to decide if it’s in poor taste to get the couples Christmas gifts off their wedding registries. Is this taboo? Should I be getting them something more personal and individual for Christmas? What would Emily Post say?

My fiance & I have heard from some people that registry gifts are for the wedding & the bridal gifts are more for her, but we also have heard that the registry gifts are for the shower, but then what about the wedding?

1. Can we register at 2 places even for a small wedding (150 guests), or is this considered in bad taste? I want to register for Fiesta dishes at Macy’s but find the rest of their home stuff to be overpriced, and would rather register for the rest of the stuff at Target. The other alternative is to not register for dishes at all, only register at Target and use any cash we get to buy the dishes ourselves.

2. Is it bad that our registry is going to be a short list? We do not need lots of things, and I do not have expensive tastes or elaborate entertaining plans in my head. Add that to the fact that my FH is military and we will be moving around, and we just don’t want unnecessary crap to lug around.

3. If you were a guest at a wedding and the registry was fulfilled completely, would you give cash or buy something else that you think they will like/need?

4. Is registering for a couple big ticket items rude or in bad taste? I’d like to register for a countertop KitchenAid mixer (300 dollars) and a Dyson vacuum (350 dollars). Is this rude, and should I omit them from the registry?

Please don’t suggest a cash or honeymoon registry because I feel that is in terrible taste.
We’re planning on most items being smaller items in the 5-20 dollar range…gadgets, baking pans, stuff like that.

Do you know of any similar store to Target that would be a good place to register? I’m not into spending 20 dollars on a cookie sheet, so I feel my guests shouldn’t have to either. So somewhere else reasonably priced?

Do you think registering and sending out cards with the invitations makes people feel like they should buy something? We already live together in my parents old house and have their old stuff. We would like some new things and want to register to give people an idea of what we want. I just don’t want people to feel like they have to buy us something. But there are people who will buy something no matter what so we might as well let them know what we want. I am putting a card in with the invitations with directions and such. Should insay please don’t feel obligated to buy something? How should I word it?

Hey guys, so I was invited to a surprise bridal shower tomorrow and I have a few questions about it.

So I’m planning to go to Bed Bath and Beyond to buy the couple something from their registry list, and my question is, does Bed Bath and Beyond check those items off the list once you purchase them? And do they wrap the gifts as well? Also, what would be the most appropriate gift?

I am working on the registry for the wedding.

Registry etiquette says to have items in various price ranges for everyone to have options and than to have double the items as your have guests. This is kinda hard, because that’s like 400 items! I don’t want to look greedy or ridiculous for adding items.

I am not expecting anyone to buy me gifts. If they do that’s awesome and we would appreciate anything they wish to give us, on our registry or not.

So, with all of that my actual question is:

After you got married, was there anything on your registry that you didn’t get? Or wished that you had registered for? Or even bought for yourself after wards that proved to be extremely useful?

my friend’s wedding is next week and she’s registered at walmart.com. when you go to the registry it has a lot of empty spaces that just show the name but don’t let you click on the item. does this mean the item has already been bought for them? has a page to print out for someone to scan when you buy a gift at the store. where do i use this and what is it for?this is the first wedding i’ve been a guest to instead of a part of, so i am completely lost on what to do. some things are cheap (i.e. $15-$25) and some aren’t. would it be weird to buy a few of the smaller things instead of one big one? the more expensive ones are huge and i don’t know how giving a gift like that would work. how much should i spend? i’m crafty, so i made her a cute card, but i don’t know what to write in it, i hardly know her husband to be. also, do i bring them to the wedding or send it to her? should i just walk in with it or what? i’m so confused!!!

After spending thousands of dollars on their nuptials, couples often prefer cash wedding gifts. Many couples establish a household together before marriage, and they aren’t in need of traditional gifts like towels, dishes and sheets. How close your relationship is to the pair determines what amount you should slip in the envelope.

Close Relatives
•For close relatives of the couple–parents, siblings, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles–an average wedding gift amount is at least $100.
Distant Relatives
•More distant relatives of the bride and groom, particularly if they are not in close contact with the family, should give an average wedding gift amount of $50.
Relatives 18 and Younger
•Young relatives aren’t expected to provide a gift, as their parents present a gift as being from the whole family. But if the parents want to give a gift “from your little cousin,” they can tuck an extra $10 in the card and have the child sign it.
Bridal Party
•Those who have been chosen to be in bridal party represent a special relationship they have with a couple. Groomsmen and bridesmaids should contribute an average wedding gift amount of $100 each.
Best Man and Maid of Honor
•These two people have a special place of honor in the bridal party. Their average wedding gift amount should be around $150.

A lot of couples today would prefer getting cash wedding gifts, but politely and gracefully asking this of their invited guests can get kind of tricky.
This is actually not a brand new thing all over the world. In some parts of the world like Singapore, giving cash (usually in ‘red packets’) is actually more of the norm rather than an exception. There are even countries like the Philippines that do “money dances” (the guests attach money to the newlyweds as they dance during the wedding reception). However, in some countries like the US, giving (and asking) for cash during weddings is considered brash.

There are even websites today that let guests contribute cash wedding gifts that help fund the new couple’s honeymoon.
Couples are tucking notes into their invitations, requesting checks in place of china. Towel-heavy gift registries are being replaced by cash-donation Web sites and online registries for honeymoons in Hawaii (Log on and buy the couple a romantic breakfast in bed). Some invitations even include requests for wedding sponsorships (“Open bar brought to you by Uncle Bob”).

Although a wedding always has been a parade of gifts and money from friends and family, cash was the great unspoken hope. Couples couldn’t, wouldn’t ask for it. They instead would be thrilled with a few check-filled cards and schlep around town to return their third set of mixing bowls.
