We got lucky and my FH’s aunt really makes wedding cakes. So she is making ours as our wedding gift. She has really gotten really excellent at transporting cakes since she has made so many…But I am really still a small nervous about her transporting ours…She has to drive 2 hours with it!

My mom made my wedding cake with some of my help. She paid for all materials to make the cake, I paid for the tiers and fountain, that I wanted on the cake. When the cake was deliver it wasn’t together. We place it together at the scene where the reception was.

transporting cakes is NOT simple!! IF you do go with a baker or other store that does not deliver check with them about their options on how to transport, OR if you cake is separated by columns and such they can usually place each individual cake in separate boxes and then you just stack them together on the columns.. that’s pretty simple. Luckily my mom and I make cakes and transport them frequently so even if we don’t’ make the cake transportation isn’t too terrible. I have seen some STUPID people transport a cake by sitting in the back of a pickup truck or one lady freaked me out and place a cake IN HER TRUNK! of like a small honda car! it was JULY and 100 degrees in GA! if that cake really made it to her house in one piece i would be shocked!

When we first got engaged, my fiance fell in like with a gorgeous cake he saw in a local bridal magazine. It was gorgeous with white fondant frosting and pink sugar tulips. So I contacted that bakery and found out that cake cost $12 per serving! I nearly died. Our guest count is just over 200 people! I reckon that’s a lot for a cake.

We got lucky. As long as we used the recommended bakery and chose a simple butter-cream frosted cake, ours was included in our package deal for catering at our venue. When I had looked into cakes, the best deal I could find was $3.50 per slice, which again was only for a very simple cake. Fondant is much more expensive than butter-cream. The simpler cake you choose, the less expensive it should be.
The cake we’ve ordered has white butter-cream frosting with a light blue ribbon along each tier of cake (there will be 5 tiers). Then it will have piped in a design down the front of the cake that mimics our invitations (hearts and swirls) in white with some light blue edible pearl accents. Then I bought a ceramic cake topper, which is white with 2 hearts and has swirls on the base. We’re very pleased with our cake and even more pleased we were able to find one we liked that was included in our catering package!

If you’re going to be transporting your own cake, find someone with an SUV who can place the cake on the floor of the vehicle and make sure they drive really slowly! (with flashers on if need be)

It was $3.50 per serving. $700 for a cake serving 200 people.

We found it from a baker who specializes in wedding cakes only

They delivered it for us, about 30 miles, I forget the delivery fee. They also set it up and added flowers to it at the venue.

We had a small wedding so we just got a picture cake from a grocery store (it was a very small notice wedding!)

From our originally plotted wedding our cake was going to cost $4 per slice per person for a more basic cake. If we went fancier it would have been $6-8 per person.

    1. How much is your cake per serving?
Usually $4.60 per serving, we get it for $2.30 per serving since we are working with a venue that uses our baker (score!)

    2. Where did you find it?
The bakery we like: AnnMarie’s Sweets, Berlin, NJ

    and

    3. If family made it or you got it at a grocery store that doesn’t deliver, how did you transport it / were you worried about a well meaning family member or friend driving it and ending up with smushed cake?
    N/A

In my area, the average for wedding cake is $2.50-$3.00 per slice.

One thing that I have heard many people doing is getting a small cake from a fancy bakery just for photos and for the couple, and having large sheet cakes in a similar flavor/icing color (from the grocery store or a less expensive bakery) sliced in the kitchen and served to guests. This usually ends up saving some money.

As far as transportation, I would choose a trustworthy friend with no other tasks before the wedding (so not a member of the wedding party) and a excellent car! Reckon about it this way – all cakes have to get delivered by someone. A person who knows you may even be more careful than the weirder in the delivery truck.
